Robert Gair Company was a paper packaging manufacturer that was founded in Brooklyn, New York in 1878 by the Scottish businessman, Robert Gair. The company started out as a small-scale paper producing business and gradually expanded into the manufacturing of corrugated boxes and other paper-based packaging products.
Over time, the company grew to become one of the largest packaging producers in the United States, with factories in several locations across the country. The company was renowned for its innovative packaging techniques, such as the development of the first machine to mass-produce corrugated cardboard boxes.
The company was also a leader in the recycling movement, having established its own paper recycling plant in the early 20th century. By the 1920s, Robert Gair Company was the largest paper recycler in the US.
In the 1950s, Robert Gair Company was acquired by Continental Can Company, which was later merged with packaging giant Crown Cork and Seal to form Crown Holdings, Inc. Today, Crown Holdings is one of the world's largest manufacturers of metal packaging products.
Despite the company's eventual merger and transformation, the Robert Gair name has continued to be associated with the history of the paper and packaging industry, and its contribution to the development of modern packaging is widely recognized.
